Weekend Carving Workshop with David Lane

Join artist David Lane of New England Puppets Arts for a multi-day puppet building workshop. Carving North American basswood, participants will learn the basics of flat plane carving techniques using a single-bevel detail knife. After learning cuts and grips, we’ll move on to carve puppet heads & hands, which will be the bases for a Polish-style kukiełka. We’ll complete our puppets with a simple fabric body and watercolor paint.

This workshop offers an opportunity to explore carving techniques echoing the ideas developed by early 20th century Scandinavian artist Axel Petersson Doderhultarn, whose work influenced generations of carvers in Europe and the US. Carving knives will be provided as part of your registration fee, but if you'd like to purchase your own in advance, David recommends this one from Flexcut.
