About the event
On Sunday May 4, 2025 you are invited to join LIVING SOILS RISING, a participatory performance with hundreds of NYC residents near to New York State’s largest fossil fuel facility - right at Under the K Bridge Park! We will awaken a healing liberation of the soils where the fossil fuel industry was first born in 1867 and envision a livable energy future.
The Urban Soils Institute is partnering with Swale-resident artist Marina 'heron' Tsaplina on LIVING SOILS RISING and invites you to submit your favorite fungi, plants and microorganisms that are remediators of industrially polluted, oil-seeped, petrochemical soils. (Eastern Cottonwood and Oyster mushrooms are already in the mix, thanks to soil ecologist Nance Klehm.)
The nominated mushrooms and plants will be incorporated into the event on May 4 as costumes and hats during a puppet-drag procession and public-education mini-walking tours.
